Private Practice for Nurses and Midwives
Guidance from the Nursing Council
There is nothing contained in any of the South African Nursing Council ’s regulations which prohibits a nurse from setting herself up in private practice, provided she practises within her scope of practice and does not contravene the rules setting out the acts or omissions which could lead to disciplinary action by the Council.
Practitioners wishing to set up a private practice should consult Nursing Act, 2005 (Act No. 33 of 2005) and the abovementioned regulations. Printed copies of these documents can be purchased from the Council at the rate applicable at the time of purchase. You can also download free copies from this website by clicking on the links below –
The Nursing Council does not issue practice numbers. You are therefore advised to direct any request in this regard to the Board of Health Care Funders of South African (BHF), P O Box 2324, Parklands, 2121. BHF telephone number is (011) 537-0200.
